Brief Historical Overview

Prehistory studies have been present at the UAB since its founding in 1968. They were initially part of the Department of History, and from 1985 on became one of the areas of knowledge that formed the Department of History of Pre-Capitalist Societies and Social Anthropology. In 1995, the Department of Social Anthropology and Prehistory was established, until the current Department of Prehistory was officially created by agreement of the UAB Governing Council on May 26, 2004.

The Laboratory of Paleo-economy and Human Paleoecology was established in 1986. As it grew, it later became the Archaeological Analysis Service, leading to the creation of other more specialized laboratories and the formation of research groups.
