One year ago, on May 14th, 2019, the audiovisual production “50 years of the student movement in UAB” was screened. It is a documentary that explains in just over 20 minutes the main fight of the student movement and the common points that existed throughout the fifty years of the University history.
During the interventions, the representatives of the first decades insist that one of the main characteristics of the student movement is that there is no transmission of knowledge between generations; it is a cyclical movement, who ends up making the same mistakes. On the other hand, the representatives of the last decades point out that this is changing and that there is knowledge transfer between generations now. ILP Universitats could be an example of this, since it’s the result of the fights of previous generations.
This first anniversary of the documentary also coincides with the culmination of the process of the ILP Universities, since in the last approval of the budgets and, despite the situation of health crisis, a 30% reduction in university fees is contemplated, central demand of the ILP Universitats initiative.
The speakers also talked about women’s role within the student movement. All of them agreed on the fact that women have always been part of the student movement but were rather invisibilized – all referents were men. This has also changed in the last years: there are referents now and feminist claims have become part of the student movement.
