UNESCO has accepted the renewal of the UNESCO Chair in Communication until the year 2028. Thus, the agreement signed in 1990 between the UAB abd the United Nation's organisation will continue to be valid for 4 more years. Coordinated by Amparo Huertas, researcher and director of the Institute for Communication (InCom-UAB), the Chair in Communication, which is the first chair specialising in communication, will continue to work on intercultural dialogues and inclusive education.

Among the activities planned for this new period, the development of the project "Social Polarization and Interculturality: The monitoring of political news by migrant and native youth from an intersectional perspective", financed by the Spanish Ministry for Science, Innovation and Universities, stands out.

Many outstanding actions took place in the 2020-2024 period by the Chair in Communication,  such as the publication of the document "Idees per a abordar la comunicació inclusiva en els estudis universitaris de comunicació", and the results of the project "Diàleg Brasil-Espanya per la innovació docent en comunicació inclusiva", which obtained a grant in the 38th Call for Grants of the UAB Solidarity Fund. Collaboration between universities

UNESCO's recognition implies promoting initiatives for the exchange and dissemination of knowledge. In October 2023, Amparo Huertas attended a meeting of UNESCO Chairs in which the Declaration of Cordoba was signed, which aims to strengthen the role of the Chairs and puts emphasis on the support of the institutions involved. The UAB UNESCO Chair in Communication plans to attend the next national meeting which will take place in 2025 in Gran Canaria. Moreover, Professor Huertas is a member of ORBICOM (Network of UNESCO Chairs in Communication) and, since 1 October 2023, she forms part of its advisory committee.

The UNESCO Chairs initiative was founded with the objective of conferring this distinction on higher education teaching and research units and research centres standing out for their academic excellence, and which also share the objectives of the UNESCO. Its main purpose is to encourage the cooperation and creation of networks among universities with the aim of exchanging knowledge and sharing projects. In 1992, the UNITWIN programme was also created, which brings together the 830 chairs existing in the 110 UNESCO member states, among which is also the UNESCO Chair in Communication (InCom-UAB). The chairs are grouped together into UNESCO priority areas and work to achieve the sustainable development goals which are a part of the 2030 Agenda.
