UAB, second university in scientific output in Spain

UAB is the second university in Spain in terms of research output with over 10,300 articles published according to this year's report by the SCImago research group, which has analysed the scientific productivity during the 2003-2007 period of over 2,000 institutions around world. The ranking also includes seven centres from the UAB Research Park and UAB Sphere.

The first five positions in the SIR ranking (SCImago Institutions Rankings) go to France's Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS), to the scientific academies of China and Russia and to the Universities of Harvard and Tokyo.

The report includes a total of 123 institutions in Spain. The first ten, in order of position, are: CSIC (8), University of Barcelona (123), Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (171), Complutense University of Madrid (180), Autonomous University of Madrid (213), University of Valencia (236), Technical University of Catalonia (258), University of Grenada (330), University of Seville (352) and University of Santiago de Compostela (381).

If one looks at only the ranking of university centres, UAB occupies position 144 in volume of publications.

The ranking also includes seven centres from the UAB Research Park and UAB Sphere: the university hospitals of Vall d'Hebron (726), Santa Creu and Sant Pau (914), and Germans Trias i Pujol (1197), Hospital del Mar (1272), the Institute of High-Energy Physics (1442), the health corporation Corporació Sanitària Parc Taulí (1834) and the Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia (1839).

The report was carried out with the Scopus d'Elsevier bibliographic database, and studied the data of more than 16 million publications, almost 150 million citations and 2080 institutions from 84 countries divided into five sectors (higher education centres, public research centres, bio-health centres, companies and others). The research group's evaluation took into account five global indicators of production, collaboration and scientific impact: the number of articles published in academic journals, cites per document, publications made in collaboration with foreign institutions, average impact of the journals in which the articles were published, and the ratio between the average impact of the institution and the world average of publications of the same time frame and subject area.

The SCImago research group, directed by Félix de Moya, professor at the University of Grenada, is formed by experts from the Higher Council of Scientific Research (CSIC) and the universities of Granada, Carlos III of Madrid, Extremadura, Alcalà de Henares and Porto.
