UAB will be receiving 24 Chinese doctoral students through the grant programme China Scholarship Council (CSC), a Chinese government organisation. These young researchers will be working on their doctoral thesis at UAB for the next three years.

Five years ago the CSC began offering 6,000 grants to students from the 100 top Chinese universities with the aim of helping students carry out their doctoral studies abroad. In 2010, one hundred of these students decided to study at universities in Spain.

UAB received a total of 54 applications and of these, 24 students were awarded a CSC grant to study at UAB. It will therefore be the university in Catalonia with the largest number of Chinese doctoral students participating in this programme. Students will be coming from 16 different universities and already have been assigned a UAB tutor who will also be directing their thesis. They will be carrying out their studies in the following areas: computer science, electronic engineering, language and cognitive science, materials science, neuroscience, education, chemistry, animal health and medicine, business economics, biotechnology, public health and geography.

The UAB office in Shanghai acts as an important link for researchers interested in studying at UAB. Under its internationalisation project, in 2008 UAB opened its office in Shanghai with the objective of strengthening relations with a strategic country. Some of the students staying at UAB under the CSC grants come from universities who have signed exchange and collaboration agreements with UAB. During the 2010/11 academic year, UAB was home to 111 undergraduate and graduate students, as well as to 135 continuing education students from China.

A consolidated relation with China

UAB has been leader in relations with China since it first offered Chinese language classes and studies in East Asia. At its office in Shanghai, UAB is especially dedicated to informing on its master's degrees and postgraduate courses. It also has participated in several international meetings and signed collaboration agreements with technological centres belonging to the food industry. UAB, in collaboration with Casa Asia and UB, also took part in the creation of the Confucius Institute in Barcelona.
