UAB in 190th place in the QS Rankings

The UAB maintains its position among the best 200 universities in the world, according to the just-published QS World Rankings. This university is ranked 190th in spite of the changes that QS has made to the way it evaluates universities, reducing the weight given to collaborative research and to publications in the field of Biomedicine.

The twelfth edition of the QS World Rankings places the UAB in 190th position among the over 800 universities examined worldwide, and in third position among Spanish universities, behind the UB (166) and the UAM (186).

By areas of knowledge, the 23rd place for Veterinary Medicine stands out, making the UAB the top university in Spain in this field, and also the 103rd place achieved by Social Sciences. Also noteworthy is the 114th position worldwide reached by the UAB for academic reputation and its 289th position in the number of citations per researcher.

For this edition QS has made large changes to the methodology it uses to evaluate universities. So as to balance out the weight of research in the life sciences and biomedicine, with a very large number of citations, and research in areas like the social sciences and the humanities, where the number of research articles cited is not comparable, the new methodology incorporates a factor to normalise the different areas of knowledge, reducing the weight of publications in bioscience. In addition, the rankings have for the first time excluded articles by over 10 affiliated institutions, which tend to be published in the case of large-scale collaborative research in High Energy Physics, Genetics and Medicine.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA) and Harvard University (USA) lead the rankings, with the University of Cambridge (United Kingdom) and Stanford University (USA) tied in third place.

The QS Rankings are based on four pillars: research, teaching, employability, and internationalisation. They use six indicators: academic reputation, reputation amongst businesses, ratio of students per faculty, citations, internationalisation of faculties and ratio of international students.

The results of the rankings are published on the website www.topuniversities.com.
