UAB chosen as Campus of International Excellence candidate

01/10/2009
The project presented by UAB is entitled UABCEI: Promoting Knowledge, Encouraging Innovation.
In the first stage, 51 universities presented their proposals and 15 were chosen, among them four universities from Catalonia.
Now that UAB is one of the fortunate 15, it can go on to opt for the recognition as a Campus of International Excellence through an international evaluation which will take place this November.
UAB fits the objectives of the CIE programme perfectly. The university forms a holistic campus in which members of the community can both work and live. UAB maintains close ties with its surroundings, is environmentally friendly and known for its high academic quality, and is at the core of a scientific pole which comprises 25 prestigious research centres and institutes. It houses large facilities such as the ALBA Synchrotron and is located near an important technology business centre made up of the Vallès Technology Park and several large firms.
The possibility of UAB becoming a Campus of International Excellence is one of the University's main goals, since it will boost the process of collaborative aggregation of the strong R&D&I area encompassed by the UAB Research Park (PRUAB), and with the enormous added value of a critical viewpoint and transversal complementarity. All this together with the communications infrastructure offered by such privileged surroundings make it the most important R&D&I pole of Europe's Mediterranean coast and most possibly of Southern Europe.
Two important strategies
The UABCIE project defines two important strategies. The first consists of what is known as the "Barcelona Nanotechnology Cluster-Bellaterra". UAB is a member of this Cluster, which focuses on the field of Materials and Nanotechnology and comprises a set of research centres and businesses located at PRUAB which make use of the special facilities such as the ALBA Synchrotron. The second strategy is related to the field of Biotechnology and Biomedicine and the clinical and translational research carried out at both UAB research centres and UAB-affiliated university hospitals.
