UAB and UB offer a joint degree on diplomacy

Ana Ripoll, Rector of the UAB; Dídac Ramírez, Rector of University of Barcelona; and Antoni Millet, Director of the International Studies Centre (CEI), signed an agreement today to create a joint Master in Diplomacy and International Public Duties. This degree, promoted by the CEI Foundation and with the support of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, was first offered in the 2011/12 academic year.

The master's degree aims to train highly qualified professionals in the subjects of diplomacy, corporate diplomacy, European public duties and international public duties. Lectures are held in English and Spanish and are given by expert academics, international civil servants and diplomats.

Academic training is provided in two ways: firstly, through an intensive theoretical programme offered by renowned professionals at the CEI headquarters during one semester. Secondly, through work placements lasting four to six months, in international organisations belonging to the European Union.

Students choosing the specialisation in Diplomacy will carry out their work placements in embassies and consulates, while those specialising in Public Duties - European or International - will carry them out in the European Union, the United Nations, the European Council, etc. Finally, students specialising in Corporate Diplomacy will work in internationalisation departments for a duration of six months.

CEI was founded in Barcelona in 1987, under the auspices of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and with the collaboration of University of Barcelona and the bank "la Caixa". Since then its has focused mainly on preparing students for entrance exams in diplomacy and tutoring Spanish citizens interested in working as civil servants in international organisations.
