Two UAB students, Clara Espar, from the University School of Tourism, and Laura Ester, from the Faculty of Biosciences, players of the Spanish water polo team, won the silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, held this summer. It is the second Olympic medal ever obtained by the female water polo team.

Six UAB students enrolled in the Tutoresport programme competed in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games: Lidón Muñoz, Joan Lluís Pons and Àfrica Zamorano in swimming, and Clara Espar, Álvaro Granados and Laura Ester Ramos in water polo. Muñoz and Zamorano study at the Faculty of Medicine; Pons and Ramos study at the Faculty of Biosciences; Granados is a student at the Faculty of Law; and Espar is enrolled in the School of Tourism and Hotel Management.

Through the Tutoresport programme, the UAB assigns a tutor who is in charge of helping these young athletes to manage the effects their athletic commitment can have on their academic performance, including competitions, meetings and trainings. Among their many tasks, tutors help students enrol, speak to their lecturers with regard to exams and practical sessions, and aid them in following the subjects they enrol in and providing the materials students may not receive due to being absent from classes.

In addition to the six aforementioned athletes, other students participating in this year's Olympic Games also formed part of the Tutoresport programme: David Alegre, Mireia Belmonte, Marc Boltó, Joan Cardona, Miguel Delas, Anna Espar, Nicolas Garcia, Maica Garcia, Aleix Heredia and Xavier Lleonart.

The UAB is also leader in the academic study of the Olympic sport and the Olympic movement, which is directly managed by the Sport Research Institute, an interdisciplinary centre bringing together specialists from several academic fields: economics, communication, law, psychology, computer science, education, etc. At the moment, the UAB Physical Activity and Sports Psychology research group is conducting a research, funded by the International Olympics Committee, to study the effects of the pandemic and the postponement of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games on the mental health of participating athletes.
