Towards the achievement of the SDGs in Catalonia

Objectius de Desenvolupament Sostenible
Nearly thirty professors participated on February 6th in the training organized at the Faculty of Veterinary to reflect on the current challenges of the implementation of the UN 2030 Agenda and to know the instruments that both the Government and civil society are driving in Catalonia.

The training, given by Meritxell Rota, technical analyst of the Sustainable Development Advisory Council of Catalonia (CADS), provided updated information on the status of the definition of the specific programmes as well as on indicators for achieving the SDGs at both global and European level. It is considered that at this moment, at the beginning of 2020, the “decade of action” has started. It is urgent for all institutions to move from awareness-raising and planning to action to begin reversing negative trends in both environmental impact and persistent social inequalities. This activity has been promoted from the Educational innovation project recognized by the Teaching Quality Office with the title “Implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in teaching” at the Faculty of Veterinary.

The 2030 Agenda was adopted by the United Nations in 2015 and is reflected in the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Each territory has defined its implementation adapted to its reality and challenges. In the case of Catalonia, the Generalitat has recently defined 909 commitments. In addition, a National Agreement process has been presented in which entities and companies are called to get involved in the SDGs.

The UAB, like the rest of the universities members of the ACUP association, pledged to promote the SDGs. There are several initiatives at different levels of the university. The UAB foundation la Fundación Autónoma Solidaria has been promoting awareness-raising and training activities for teaching and research staff and students for three years.
