The Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2020, the classification by subjects of the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), conducted by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University, places the UAB as the 5th top university in veterinary medicine, three positions ahead of last year's ranking. The first four positions go to the universities of Gant, Edinburgh and Copenhagen, and to the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover.
In addition, the UAB ranks 30th in geography worldwide and is the top university in this subject in Spain. It thereby improves last year's results, given that for the first time the UAB now ranks among the top 50 in two different subjects. Moreover, the University is among the top 200 in 22 of the 54 subjects analysed, the same amount of subjects as in last year's ranking.
According to the ranking, the UAB finds itself among the 51 to 75 best universities in the world in agricultural sciences. In the top 76 to 100 universities, the UAB appears in the subjects of oceanography and biotechnology. In the 101 to 150 range, the UAB classifies in the subjects of public administration, human biological sciences, environmental science & engineering, ecology, economics, pharmacy & pharmaceutical sciences, physics, and nanoscience & nanotechnology. In the top 151 to 200, the UAB stands out in the subjects of atmospheric science, materials science & engineering, food science & technology, instruments science & technology, political sciences, nursing, chemistry, sociology, and medical technology.
The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) was first published in 2003 and is one of the most prestigious higher education classifications worldwide. The classification of universities is based on data obtained from the Clarivate Analytics's Web of Science and from official organisations. The universities taken into account for the ranking must have published a specific number of articles in each of the subjects between 2014 and 2018.
