The UAB to host the exhibition "InterMedit - El viatge possible"
The Periodicals Room of the Humanities Library will be hosting the exhibition InterMedit - El viatge possible, which connects Catalonia, the Balearic Islands and Occitania through trade and cultural contacts in the ancient Mediterranean. The exhibition, which will be inaugurated on 29 October at 1:00 p.m., will include the collaboration of the Digital Lab and the CORE in Cultural Heritage.
For twenty-five centuries, the Mediterranean Sea has been a meeting point between Phoenicians, Greeks and indigenous populations, shaping the shared identity that we understand today as Mediterraneanness. The InterMedit project claims the role of Mediterranean trade as a driving force of economic exchange, but also as a space for the transmission of ideas, beliefs and knowledge.
The exhibition is based on digital content developed within the framework of the European project InterMedit, subsidised by the Pyrenees-Mediterranean Euroregion. It is promoted by the Archaeological Museum of Ibiza and Formentera, the Archaeological Museum of Catalonia-Empúries, and the museum and oppidum of Ensérune (Occitania), with the collaboration of the Digital Lab of the UAB Open Labs and the CORE in Cultural Heritage of the UAB. This project has allowed the digitisation of important pieces from the three museums and the creation of a virtual exhibition application that combines 3D scanning, three-dimensional printing, and virtual reality resources.
Using archaeological evidence, the technological content shows the cultural contacts between three scenarios: the Phoenician-Punic Ayboshim (Ibiza), the Greek enclave of Empòrion (Empúries), and the Celtic oppidum of Ensérune. The digitisation and training phase was carried out within the Master's Degree in Digital Humanities and Heritage (UAB-UPF), with the participation of students and the collaboration of the company VR-All-Art, responsible for the implementation in virtual reality. Yuwei Guan developed the design of the virtual exhibition space in her Final Thesis (MDHH).
The inauguration ceremony will feature speeches by Laura Santamaria, vice-rector for Culture; Margarita Freixes Alás, dean of the Faculty of Arts & Humanities; Elisa Hernández Pastor, curator of Cultural Assets at MAC Empúries; Sílvia Redondo, director of the Humanities Library; Igor Bogdanovic, head of the Digital Lab; and Oriol Vicente, coordinator of the CORE for Cultural Heritage.
With InterMedit - El viatge possible, the UAB reinforces its commitment to research and the dissemination of cultural heritage through new technologies. This project opens the door to future international collaborations and new ways of disseminating archaeological knowledge through immersive digital environments.
