On 3 and 4 December, the Hotel Exe Campus will play host to the Second International Conference on Equine Welfare, organised by the Horse Project Association in collaboration with the UAB Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, the UAB International Center for Animal Law and Policy (ICALP), the Centre for Animal Ethics at the Pompeu Fabra University (UPF), the World Horse Welfare and the Franklin Institute.

The objective of the conference is to offer a multi-perspective approach to animal welfare, given that many sectors of today's society is growing aware of the need to address this issue. For this reason, the conference aims to offer a theoretical framework from which to unify criteria, share experiences and develop the foundation for the future of horse welfare. This idea, implemented from a scientific viewpoint, based on the horse's physical, mental and social planes as well as the management of their environment, offers the opportunity to improve and strengthen the motivation behind the horse-human dyad, and raise the security, health and sustainability within the equestrian sector.

The conference will include the participation of numerous world renowned professionals from different fields such as veterinary medicine, neuroscience, ethology, zoology, animal law and animal ethics; and others with years of professional experience in horse welfare such as Camí García-Morato, Teresa Gamonal, Lucy Rees, Marita Giménez-Candela, Eze Paez, Emanuela Dalla Costa, Marthe Kiley-Worthington, Ben Hart, José De Giorgio-Schoorl, Alana Chapham and Núria Màxim Bocanegra.

The inauguration of the conference will include speeches by Esther Zapater, Dean of the UAB Faculty of Law; Sofia Sund and Rocío Crespo, founding members of the Horse Project; and Marc Fusté in representation of the Spanish Royal Equestrian Foundation (RFHE). The closing session will include the presence of Dr Enrique Alonso, with a PhD in Law from the UCM and Permanent Member of the State Council; and Eloy Merino, President of the Horse Project Association.
