On 27 February, the UAB will inaugurate the Barcelona King Sejong Institute. Hong-jo Chun, South Korea's Ambassador to Spain, will participate in the event with a speech on the peace policies between the two Koreas at 12 noon at the Lecture Room 4 of the Faculty of Translation and Interpreting. The inaugural event will also include the participation of UAB Vice Rector for International Relations Màrius Martínez and Faculty Dean Albert Branchadell.

The Sejong Hakdang Insitute (King Sejong in Korean) is run by the South Korean Ministry for Culture and its objective is to promote the teaching of the country’s language and the dissemination of its culture. The institute's main offices are in Seoul and over 174 branches can be found in 58 different countries. There are currently three institutes in Spain: in addition to the centre at the UAB, located at the MRA building of the UAB Research Park, the institute can also be found at the Korean Culture Centre in Madrid and at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

The institute offers Korean language courses at all levels and programmes cultural activities such as musical recitals, meetings with Korean authors and cinema festivals. The institute was named after Sejong the Great, the fourth king of the Joseon dynasty (15th century) who created and promulgated the Korean alphabet Hangul.

The King Sejong Institute Foundation and the UAB signed an agreement in 2017 jointly to foster, promote and disseminate the language and culture of Korea through the organisation of diverse academic activities, courses and conferences, all aimed at the general public. Thanks to this joint collaboration, the UAB expands its academic ties with the region of East Asia, in which the Faculty of Translation and Interpreting is a leading centre: the UAB is also associated with the Barcelona Confucius Institute, committed to providing Chinese language and cultural teaching resources and services worldwide.
