The purpose is to train experts in the Arabic language and culture from an innovative perspective, who are committed to today's social reality and will be capable of helping European societies and institutions comprehend, dialogue and take appropriate actions in this area.

The master's degree is 100% in Arabic and is specifically focused on contemporary events (Arab revolts, history and societies in the 20th and 21st centuries, etc.) and on social commitment (cosmopolitanism and hybridisation, queer and gender studies, Arabic feminism, human rights, etc.). Registration now open!

In September 2016 the UAB will offer a new master's degree in Contemporary Arabic Studies, an academic proposal aimed at training experts in the Arab world from an innovative perspective and committed to today's social reality.

Taught wholly in Arabic by native-speaker lecturers with a solid academic and professional profile, the master's degree in Contemporary Arabic Studies is unique in Europe, open to both local and international students with prior knowledge of Arabic, interested in reaching a Level C2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

The master's degree's main objective is to aid students in mastering the Arabic language, culture and society and train professionals who can cover the growing social and institutional need for regional experts.

The programme is made up of five teaching modules and a master thesis. In addition to the module dedicated exclusively to language (Standard Modern Arabic, Levant and Moroccan Arabic, Sociolinguistics, Teaching Arabic as a Foreign Language), the master's degree modules and subjects reflect the main areas of knowledge and focus specifically on current issues (Arab Spring, history and societies of the 20th and 21st centuries, Arabic postmodernity, etc.) and on social commitment (cosmopolitanism and hybridisation, queer and gender studies, population shifts, feminism, human rights, cooperation and the service sector, etc.).

Classes will be held at the UAB Faculty of Translation and Interpreting. The master's degree is worth 60 ECTS credits and offers 25 places. Registration is open for this first edition.
