The incidence of breast cancer in trans people, the representation of femininity in Zowi's urban popular music, an AI platform to build a safer and more inclusive urban design, or a non-fiction short film from a family album are some of the 33 best Final Degree Projects (TFG) with a gender perspective awarded by the Observatory for Equality of the UAB, which were delivered in an institutional event on Tuesday 9 April.

E. Zapater: "In addition to answering fundamental questions for society, these TFGs pave the way for new challenges".

The award ceremony for the best Final Degree Projects (TFG) with a gender perspective for the 2022/23 academic year took place on Tuesday 9 April at the Rectorat building. These awards, funded by the Catalan Institute of Women (ICD), reached its eighth edition this year. Thirty-three works have been awarded, from 12 of the 13 faculties at the UAB.

The ceremony, which was attended by the winners, their families and the lecturers who tutored the works, was chaired by the secretary general of the UAB, Esther Zapater, the executive director of the Catalan Institute of Women, Èlia Soriano, and the director of the Observatory, Maria Prats.

During the ceremony, each award-winning student took the stage to collect the diploma and a set of books, and then went to the lectern to explain the content of the work that had earned them the award.

The winning TFGs (all of which received a minimum grade of 8.5 to be eligible for the award) cover topics such as new masculinities, the prediction of sexual aggression, ecofeminism, the stigma of bad mothers, women in the rural world, the representation of femininity in music, and institutional violence, among others.

In her speech, executive director of the ICD Èlia Soriano Costa thanked the work carried out by the students in their TFGs, since "they are full of data and information that help us make public policies from the administrations". She also stated that it was a day to celebrate the work well done by all the authors of the papers.

Then, the director of the Observatory, Maria Prats, was in charge of mentioning each of the award winners during the ceremony.

At the end of the awards ceremony, the secretary general of the UAB, Esther Zapater, offered a few words in which she congratulated the award-winning students - currently already graduates - and thanked the work carried out by the tutors of the works. Zapater explained that "In addition to answering fundamental questions for society, these TFGs pave the way for new challenges". And she confirmed the importance of incorporating gender perspective in all areas of knowledge.

Raising awareness among students and lecturers

For eight years now, the  Observatory for Equality has held calls to choose the best TGFs with a gender perspective from all those presented in the previous academic year. The object of these awards is to raise awareness among students and lecturers on gender equality and non-discrimination, while also fostering research conducted using this approach in all academic fields.
