The Hospital de Mataró becomes a UAB University Hospital
The Hospital de Mataró, belonging to the Health Consortium of the Maresme (CSdM), was officially designated a University Hospital thanks to an agreement signed by the CSdM, the Catalan Ministry for Health and the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. With this agreement, the UAB expands its network of university hospitals, which also includes Hospital Vall d'Hebron and Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau in Barcelona, Hospital Germans Trias i Pujol in Badalona, and Hospital Parc Taulí in Sabadell.

This agreement consolidates a collaboration that began in the year 2000, when these two institutions were working jointly in academic and research training in the biomedical and health sciences sector. With this new status, the University Hospital of Mataró is reinforced as a leading centre of the Maresme region in healthcare teaching, research and innovation.
Commitment to health teaching, training and innovation
The pubilc-private agreement will allow undergraduate students to carry out their academic and practical training at the Hospital and associated CSdM centres. Among the students benefiting from this agreement will be those erolled in the bachelor's degrees of Medicine and Speech Therapy, and in the master's degree in General Health Psychology and other areas of the biosciences. Moreover, the concert consolidates and reinforces graduate, master's and PhD programmes already being developed jointly by the CSdM and the UAB, and will give CSdM researchers access to the UAB campus so that they can develop their projects.
The University Hospital of Mataró will also have new structures and resources to make teaching and research easier, as well as a mixed CSdM-UAB committee that will guarantee a correct implementation. The agreement also includes the creation of associated lecturers – in addition to the already existing collaborators – as well as the possibility of integrating university researchers into different health projects.
Fostering innovation in health and higher quality in healthcare
One of the main objectives of this agreement is to strengthen the CSdM's lines of research and innovation in health, sharing material and human resources with the university, promoting applied research and fostering the transfer of knowledge in the health and social fields. It will also contribute to the continuous improvement of healthcare, ensuring that healthcare professionals in training have access to the most advanced methodologies and practical experience necessary to face the challenges of the sector.
"Strategic synergies"
The University Hospital represents a decisive step in the strategy to become a centre of excellence in healthcare, training, research and innovation, with a direct impact on the quality of teaching and healthcare innovation in the region.
According to Rafael Lledó, manager of the CSdM, “this agreement with the UAB, one of the 200 best universities in the world, is a great opportunity and, at the same time, a great challenge to strengthen the academic, scientific and healthcare level of our professionals, as well as a great step forward for our institution and for the region”.
Javier Lafuente, rector of the UAB, said that this link between Hospital and University “establishes strategic synergies between the academic and professional worlds, which mutually benefit each other and enrich their potentialities”. In addition, he assured that the UAB, with this agreement, “expands its radius of action towards the Maresme and thus strengthens its impact in the area, something crucial for us because the transfer of knowledge to society as a whole and the connection with the institutional and productive fabric of our environment are unavoidable objectives”.
