In Catalonia, the universities UAB, UPC and UB will be offering science summer camp workshops in different research areas for students interested in gaining experience in scientific research. UAB will be offering workshops on nanotechnology for 16-year-olds during the first two weeks of July, and for 17- and 18-year-olds during the last two weeks.

The Science Summer Camp officially began on Monday 5 July at the UB residence hall building Col·legi Major Sant Raimon de Penyafort (Av. Diagonal 643, Barcelona) with a conference by Dr Claudi Mans, emeritus professor of the UB Department of Chemical Engineering and expert in food chemistry. Dr Claudi Mans has published over 150 articles on research and popular science. Among his most recent publications are Truita cremada (2005), Els secrets de les etiquetes (2006), and La vaca esfèrica (2008).

The main purpose of the Science Summer Camps is to foster the interest of young people in science, technology and innovation in views of the economic reforms proposed by the European Commission within the framework of the Spanish EU Presidency and the EU Strategy 2020.
