The "Acollida" community garden is a participative space for refugee students and volunteers from the FAS and the CEAR.

Hort comunitari programa acollida FAS

Thanks to the interest of two young refugees living at the Vila Universitària, the refugee welcome programme of the Fundació Autònoma Solidària began to participate actively with the committee of users of the Faculty of Education's garden "classroom". Since March 2021, over 30 people from very different walks of life, ages, professions, studies and origins have met together with the objective of setting up and looking after the garden. It has become a place in which young people can share experiences and of community participation. And this continued also during the summer months, in which volunteers from the FAS (Fundació Autònoma ) and CEAR (Spanish Commission for Refugee Assistance) met regularly and continued to care for the garden.

This community garden is an activity within to the social assistance volunteering programme for refugees offered by the FAS. It is a project coordinated in close collabroation with the Garden Classroom Users Committee of the UAB Faculty of Education.

On 22 September, first-year students from the bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education were invited to participate in the garden as part of the subject “Mirem el món”, developed under the “Gender and Migrations” project. Some 100 students discovered the project and were able to talk with the people taking part in it, including CEAR and FAS volunteers who meet weekly to tend to the garden. Images of the meeting can be viewed through the FAS' social networks.

This activity was made possible by the UAB Faculty of Education and the hortaula Users Committee.

All those interested in participating as volunteers in the Programa d’Acollida and work with refugees at the UAB, can fill out a contact form and/or send an e-mail to: fas.acollida@uab.cat.
