Over 300 experts on Particle Physics gather in Barcelona

06/05/2013
From 13 to 18 May, Barcelona hosted the international conference "Large Hadron Collider Physics" (LHCP 2013), organised by the IFAE. The conference brought together 300 scientists specialising in particle physics, both theoretical and experimental, so that they could discuss the most recent discoveries and advances in this field, mainly those obtained by the experiments conducted at the Large Hadron Collider of the CERN (European Laboratory for Particle Physics). The LHCP conference is the result of a merger between two major international conferences: the "Physics at Large Hadron Collider" and the "Hadron Collider Physics Symposium".
Among those participating were Dr. Sergio Bertolucci, head of Research and Computing at CERN, Dr. Tatsuya Nakada, spokesperson for CERN's LHCb (Large Hadron Collider Beauty ) experiment for over a decade and president of ECFA (European Committee for Future Accelerators), and Dr. Joseph Lykken, of the Department of Theoretical Physics at Fermilab, known particularly for his contributions to superstring theory.
A major theme of the conference was the attempt to determine whether the particle discovered in July 2012 is really the Higgs Boson of the Standard Model of Particle Physics, or whether it is the lightest of a series of bosons predicted by some theories that go beyond this model.
Among other social events, the conference included a reception held on 13 May at Barcelona Town Hall, offered by the deputy mayor, Mr. Jaume Ciurana, a talk open to the general public entitled "The search for the Higgs Boson at the LHC: a historical view", given by Prof. Tejinder Virdee, of Imperial College, on 16 May at 7 o'clock in the evening, at the CosmoCaixa museum in Barcelona.
