Nobel Laureate Jean-Marie Lehn to speak at the II Doctoral Seminars on Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry organises the II Doctoral Seminar Series taking place from 6 to 8 June at the Faculty of Sciences and Biosciences. Participating in the series will be renowned researchers, including Jean-Marie Lehn who received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1987.
31/05/2012
On 6 June, professor of the University of Strasbourg Jean-Marie Lehn, will give a conference entitled "Perspectives in Chemistry: From Supramolecular Chemistry towards Adaptive Chemistry". Dr Lehn will offer a discourse on the design of supramolecular architectures based on spontaneous organisation processes carried out by molecules (self-assembly). This allows storing molecular information and has important applications in the development of nanoscience and nanotechnology.
On the following day, Benjamin G. Davis, professor at Oxford and recipient of the Tetrahedron Young Investigator Award in Bioinorganic and Medicinal Chemistry (2012), will be talking on "Sugars and Proteins". Davis will analyse the wide range of possibilities offered by modifications in the structure and functionality of biomolecules in medicine, in aspects such as drug delivery, degradation of selective proteins, diagnosis, therapy and intervention.
On the last day, participants are invited to the closing conference on "Nanotechnology's Next Challenge: Commercialization", by Javier García Martínez, professor of the University of Alacant and founder of the MIT spin-off Rive Technology Inc. García Martínez will speak from an entrepreneur's point of view of today's great challenge in nanotechnology: converting recent discoveries and patents into a consolidated industry.
A total of 27 third-year and fourth-year doctoral students from the areas of Analytical Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry and Inorganic Chemistry will be participating in the seminars. All students will present the scientific projects they have collaborated and prizes will be handed to the best presentations.
One of the event's objectives is to strengthen ties between doctoral research projects and the labour market and foster entrepreneurial initiatives amongst students. For this reason, the series is open to the general public. All those interested in attending must register by sending an email to the Department of Chemistry at gestio.postgrau.quimica@uab.cat.
