Nobel in Economics awarded to two BGSE members

11/10/2011
The two economists received the award by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences for their contributions to establishing relations between inflation and macroeconomic policy measures, such as interest rates. The two researchers offer ways of understanding economic cycles based on the mutual influence of decisions taken regarding economic policies and the decisions taken by citizens.
Thomas J. Sargent is professor of New York University and Christopher A. Sims is professor of Princeton University. Both are members of the Scientific Council of the Barcelona Graduate School of Economics (BGSE), an inter-university research institution affiliated to UAB and UPF. The centre recently was selected as a centre of excellence by the Severo Ochoa programme in the field of Social Sciences and the Humanities. The programme awards recognition to the top eight research centres in Spain in different research disciplines. The academic community of BGSE, created in 2006, is formed by four groups: the Department of Economic Analysis Fundamentals of Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona; the Department of Economics and Business of Pompeu Fabra University; the Institute of Economic Analysis of CSIC; and the Centre for Research in International Economics (CREI).
BGSE ranks this year among the top twenty economic research centres in the world and among the top three centres of Europe in scientific production, according to the ranking carried out by RePEc (Research Papers in Economics), an independent institution for the bibliometric analysis of economics and related disciplines.
