The large increase in mobile phone production these last years has caused serious consequences in the countries that have the raw materials used to produce them.  Probably, the most known case is the one of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where have been reported numerous cases of child labor and the destruction of habitats of different animals due to coltan mines, the material used to make phone battery.

On the other hand, nearly 90% of the material of the phones can be recycled. For this reason, the Environmental programme of the FAS starts a campaign to collect mobile phones in disuse.

In the FAS establishment, located in the Plaça Civica, a box has been placed to deposit phones aiming to reuse them and reduce the non-sustainable demand of materials. In addition, in the Faculty of Veterinary, they can be delivered at the Logistical support and Information point.  In this way, the mobile phones that cannot be used anymore will be recycled by sections and, in case they are still working, they will be sent to countries with a high poverty rate.

The benefits obtained from the recycling of these mobile phones, managed by Eureka Mobil company, will be donated to Fundació Mona. Located in Riudellots de la Selva (Girona), this foundation works on rescue, welfare and mistreated primates.
