The Nutrition and Animal Welfare Service (SNiBA) of the Department of Animal and Food Science of Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), with the support of Boehringer Ingelheim, recently opened the Farm Animal Welfare Education Centre.

The new centre (FAWEC-Farm Animal Welfare Education Centre), which began its activities in the first quarter of 2012, was built thanks to a three-year financial agreement between the German company and the UAB. The centre is located at the UAB Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.

New centre's activities

The purpose of the new centre is to train veterinarians in aspects concerning the welfare of farm animals. All activities thus are focused on improving the skills professionals have in this field. One of the first to be carried out will be the publication of a collection of texts summarising the information currently available on the welfare of dairy cattle and pigs.

Theoretical and practical courses also will be organised, including visits to livestock farms with the aim of discovering the fundamentals of protocols on animal welfare. All courses will include online versions.

In the future, a website will be made available with all the information on courses, publications and activities taking place at the centre.
