Matgas celebrates its 10th Anniversary

MatGas
On 1 and 2 June Matgas, centre of excellence in CO2 and sustainability, will be celebrating its 10th anniversary with an International Symposium on Energy, Sustainability and the Environment. The event will begin with an official celebration held at Matgas at 11:30 am on 1 June with the participation of the directors of all three partners: Carburos Metálicos, belonging to the multinational firm Air Products, the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and UAB. National and international experts will be meeting on Wednesday afternoon at Hotel Campus and on Thursday at the Rectorate building during the two day symposium on issues related to sustainable energy.

Attendees at the opening event will include Lourdes Vega, Director of MATGAS; George Decrop, Global Marketing Director of Air Products; Montgomery Alger, Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of Air Products, Rafael Rodrigo Montero, President of CSIC and Ana Ripoll, Rector of UAB.

The International Symposium on Energy, Sustainability and the Environment will serve to display the most relevant advances made in these fields as well as future perspectives and scientific and technological challenges still existing. Among guest speakers Matgas has invited internationally renowned researchers from both academic and business sectors, some of which are members of the three Matgas partners: Air Products, CSIC and UAB.

The symposium will begin with a revision of project results presently carried out by Matgas, presented by Dr Lourdes Vega, the centre's director. Following that professor Robert Armstrong, of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and director de la MIT Initiative for Energy, will offer a plenary conference on energy and the environment, with special focus on the future of natural gas as an energy emitting less amounts of carbon dioxide. Other conferences will be offered on subjects related to climate change, sustainability and today's energy challenges.

On 2 June Professor Michele Aresta of the University of Bari, Italy, will be giving a plenary conference on the use of carbon dioxide in different chemical processes, while Professor Andreas Züttel, of EMPA in Zurich, Switzerland, will speak on the role of hydrogen in energy storage. The programme will be completed with debates on the use of CO2, the analysis of life cycles as a tool to study benefits for the environment with the reduction of processes and products, simulations and modellings, as well as a round table focused on future trends in energy, sustainability and the environment.

As a result of years of work, Matgas has become a world leader in the study and development of technologies for the capturing, storing and sustainable use of carbon dioxide, as well as in other issues related to sustainable energies.

The Matgas group, centre of excellence in CO2 and sustainability, is the result of a strategic alliance between the firm Carburos Metálicos, the Air Products group, the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and UAB. Located at the UAB campus, the centre is leader in the sustainable use of energy sources, reducing emissions of CO2 and other greenhouse gases, and developing new technologies for the capturing, storage and use of carbon dioxide and for the use of hydrogen and other sustainable energy sources, water treatments, food preservation, and simulations, modellings and analyses of life cycles.
