Josep Cid, professor of the Department of Political Science and Public Law at the UAB, was awarded the Rafael Salillas National Prize in Criminology by the Spanish Society of Criminological Research. The prize is awarded in recognition of the lifelong achievements of renowned criminologists, as well as their "influence and transcendence" in this field.

Josep Cid

Professor Cid was the main researcher of twelve different research projects, and participated in eight more studies, two of which international. He is author of eight monographs, 26 papers and 14 book chapters. He was director of three PhD theses and visiting researcher at the Institute of Criminology, University of Cambridge; at the University of Bologna and at the London School of Economics and Political Science. He was also the coordinator of the UAB bachelor's degree in Criminology.

The prize was awarded to him in recognition of his contributions as "one of the first" academics in Spain to dedicate his career to the scientific research of criminology. Since the completion of his PhD thesis, ProfessorCid has studied issues such as alternatives to prison sentences, and processes involved in the abandonment of delinquent behaviour. In addition to other aspects of his work, the Spanish Society of Criminological Research pointed out the project entitled "De la presó a la comunitat" [From Prison to the Community], drafted alongside UB lecturer Antonio Andrés Pueyo and considered to be "a model in Spain in terms of post-penitentiary assistance".

Professor Cid was awarded the prize, which carries the name of Spain's pioneering criminologist Rafael Salillas (1854-1923), as part of the 13th Spanish Congress of Criminology, in which other mentions were also conferred to novel criminology researchers and students providing outstanding contributions, with the aim of "recognising the effort put into the research and promotion of criminology in different stages of their academic careers".
