"Hermaphrodites on Horseback or the Rebellion of Desire": Voice and Visibility at the Inclusive Art Week
A piece that gives voice to intersex experiences and questions gender norms.
From 20 November to 3 December, theUniversitat Autònoma de Barcelona will host the fifth edition of the Inclusive Art Week, a space that promotes reflection, community participation, and the defence of diversity through performing arts and culture.
In this edition, one of the most notable proposals is the performance of Hermaphrodites on Horseback or the Rebellion of Desire, which will take place on 27 November at 5:00 p.m.
The piece, which combines documentary theatre, performance, science fiction and the aesthetics of a freak show, gathers and amplifies real experiences of intersex people. Drawing from this material, the work constructs a narrative that questions the rigid and dual gender frameworks still present in our society and invites audiences to imagine a new order that embraces bodily and identity plurality.
With a language that moves between humour, fiction and poetic storytelling, Hermaphrodites on Horseback or the Rebellion of Desire traces a journey through the myth of the hermaphrodite — from its symbolic and literary origins to the lived reality of the people who reinterpret it today. The play invites the public to listen to first-person accounts and to understand how narratives change when the protagonists themselves tell their own stories.
This performance is part of the UAB’s commitment to raising awareness about intersexuality and defending the rights to bodily integrity, pleasure, and reproduction within the LGTBI+ community. Through art as a transformative tool, the Inclusive Art Week reaffirms the university’s dedication to fostering more open, diverse and respectful spaces.
