Henkel opens new research centre at UAB

The President of the Government of Catalonia (Generalitat), Artur Mas, has opened Henkel's new R&D facility and the spin-off Afinitica at the UAB Research Park (PRUAB) in Bellaterra. The multinational has invested seven million euros in these R&D laboratories and another one at the Leitat technology centre in Terrassa. The new facilities will create 55 jobs for top-level researchers.

The new laboratories will conduct research mainly on new concepts and materials for creating adhesives with high added value, capable of adapting to the future needs of clients and society in general, and with applications in sectors like electronics, the motor industry, do-it-yourself products and flexible packaging.

In 2010 Henkel launched a collaborative R&D venture in Catalonia and following on from the success of its centres in the PRUAB and in the ICIQ in Tarragona, for which it was awarded the Generalitat's 2012 National Research Prize, the company has widened its R&D networks in Spain, opening three new research centres and collaborating with the Institute of Materials Science, the Institute of Nanotechnology, the National Microelectronics Centre, the ALBA Synchrotron and MATGAS.

Henkel is a worldwide and domestic market leader in adhesives, and relies heavily on innovation as a key to success. The company invests 3% of its sales revenues in R&D, approximately 450 million euros per year, and has 3,000 people working in this area worldwide.
