First prize UNESCO Mathematics of Planet Earth 2013

Daniel Ramos, professor of Mathematics and a member of MMACA, has been awarded first prize in the international competition for the design of virtual or physical modules of Mathematics of Planet Earth 2013, the project "Sphere of the Earth," which explains mathematics of cartography.

At the opening ceremony of the year "Mathematics of Planet Earth 2013" at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, held on March 5, prizes were anounced and Daniel Ramos presented his module.

For the Museu de las Matemàtiques de Catalunya, MMACA, the award is an international recognition for its excellent work.

"Mathematics of Planet Earth 2013" is organitzed by UNESCO, togheter with other international organitzations (ICSU, IMU, ICIAM) to highlight the contributions made by mathematics in the study of global planetary problems: migrations, climate change, sustainability, natural disasters, pandemics, ... and the search for solutions.

The exhibition Mathematics of Planet Earth starts with the presentation at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris of the official-winer modules. But there is still an open call to submit new modules and ideas to include in the project:

The exhibit "Sphere of the Earth" shows that maps of the spherical surface of the Earth on a plane must have distortions. The user interactively selects a disc region and sees how various maps distort it. The engaging and easy-to-use interface effectively conveys mathematical ideas relevant to the Earth."
