Ferran Sancho elected UAB's new Rector

Ferran Sancho, professor of Fundamentals of Economic Analysis, received 55.53% of total weighted votes; Pere Solà, professor of Theory and History of Education, received 44.47%.
Participation in this second round of elections was again high. Sector A participated with a total of 73.07% of its members; as did 29.32% of Sector B; 15.21% of Sector C; and 62.36% of Sector D.
Candidate Ferran Sancho received most of his votes from Sectors A and B (teaching and research staff); while Pere Solà won the majority of votes in Sectors C (students) and D (administration and services staff).
Polling took place from 9:30 am to 6:30 pm with no major incidents occurring during the day.
The rector of the university is chosen by the university community and elections are held by universal suffrage. Votes are weighted according to the Organic Law of Universities in the following manner:
- Sector A, tenure-track academic staff, 51%
- Sector B, all other academic and research staff, 9%
- Sector C, undergraduate and postgraduate students, 30%
- Sector D, administration and services, 10%

A former UAB student in Economics
Ferran Sancho i Pifarré was born in Barcelona in 1953. He received his degree in Economic and Business Sciences from UAB and went on to earn his master's degree at UC Berkeley. In 1983, he defended his doctoral thesis at UAB. In 1992, he was elected chair professor in Economic Analysis.
At UAB, Dr Sancho lectures on microeconomics and in quantitative economic methods. He has published the text 100 Problemas resueltos de estadística básica para economía y empresa, as part of UAB's Materials series.
In research he specialises in impositive and environmental fiscal policies, in the development of computational models and in interindustrial analysis.
Dr Sancho has been Vice Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business Studies (1983-85), coordinator of doctoral programmes (1994-96), Vice Rector for Research (1998-99), Vice Rector for Lecturing Staff (1999-2002), Department Director (2004-10) and member of several committees. He also has worked at the National Quality Assessment and Accreditation Agency (ANECA) and the Agency for Quality of the Catalan University System (AQU).
