A conference was offered on Tuesday 10 May entitled “Anàlisi de la guerra a Ucraïna. Claus per entendre l’escalada militar: orígens, interessos geopolítics i perspectives” [Analysis of the War in Ukraine. Keys to Understanding the Military Escalation: origins, geopolitical interests and perspectives]. The objective of the conference was to contribute to understanding this armed conflict and review its causes, perspectives and impacts from a geopolitical standpoint.

The conference took place on 10 May from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. at the conference hall of the UAB Faculty of Political Science and Sociology and had around 40 attendees.

The conference was given by Carlos Taibo, writer, publisher and former professor in Political Science and Administration at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, who shared reflections included in his book on Russia and Ukraine, entitled Rusia frente a Ucrania: Imperios, Pueblos, Energía. His conference was followed by a debate in which attendants were encouraged to participate and give their opinions on the conflict.

Rafael Grasa, lecturer in International Relations at the UAB and expert in security and transformation of conflicts, was in charge of presenting and moderating the event. A closing speech was given by Màrius Martínez, Vice Rector for International Relations.

This activity forms part of a series entitled “The UAB, in favour of peace”, created as part of the University's social responsibility and the need to act when faced with global problems, in which its academics can contribute with valuable knowledge to help critically analyse international conflicts.

The UAB channels all support mechanisms set up to help those affected by this conflict through its Fundació Autònoma Solidària (FAS), which is in charge of different types of support programmes. The University also makes sure that all members of its community from the countries in conflict, regardless of their nationality, have all their basic needs met and do not suffer from any type of discrimination, while at the same time working in coordination with the Catalan university system to mitigate any effects armed conflicts such as this one can have on them.
