Centre for Demographic Studies celebrates its 30th anniversary

On 10 February 2014 the Centre for Demographic Studies (CED) will have completed 30 years since its founding. To commemorate this event, the centre has prepared a series of activities that will take place throughout the 2013/14 academic year, including seminars, conferences and celebration events.

Different CED research groups have programmed seminars which will take place starting in January. They will be focused on the past and present of marriages, new perspectives on residential and migration systems in Spain, the effects of the economic crisis on migration and its management, as well as family space and time after a divorce.

A series of lectures, entitled "Cicle de conferències CED#30", will be offered throughout the academic year and will be given by scientists and university lecturers from home and abroad. Some of the issues dealt with in these conferences will be dowries and social mobility in Catalonia, preferences and expectations during the transition to adulthood, the evolution of fertility in couples, potential travellers in places with a high speed train station, education routes and their effects on gender differences when entering the labour market, etc.

The centre began to research into population structures and dynamics in 1984 thanks to an agreement between the Government of Catalonia and the UAB. It became a consortium in 1985 and is governed by representatives of each of its sponsor institutions and the director of the centre, Anna Cabré, professor of the Department of Geography at the UAB.

With research, teaching and dissemination as its main objectives, the centre works on specific and permanent research lines and on specific projects commissioned by entities in both the public and private sector. Through courses, postgraduate programmes, seminars and publications, the centre trains specialists in population studies and, more generally, disseminates the results of its research with the aim of contributing to the teaching and training of the several disciplines existing in this field.

With the aim of facilitating this dissemination, the CED includes a library and documentation centre open to the public, with statistical data, a specialised periodicals library and a large bibliography on themes related to the population. It also contains a database where a vast collection of demographic statistics from Catalonia, Spain and Europe are kept. One of its priorities since it was founded is the establishment of relations and links to other institutions at the national and international level.
