Benefit from discounts when publishing in open access journals

Finançament per publicar en accés obert

SAGE, RSC, ACS and MDPI offer discounts to the UAB community for open access publishing in their journals

19/05/2020

Research centres and institutes usually obtain funding from bodies that establish, as an indispensable requirement to enjoy such benefit, that the articles resulting from the research be published in open access. This is the case of the H2020 programme or the calls of the State Plan, among others. Publishing in open access brings researchers many benefits. Worth mentioning is impact optimisation and preserving the rights to use their work.

Currently, negotiations conducted with the main publishers that are part of the CSUC’s Digital Library of Catalonia have secured discounts for the UAB community to publish in its open access journals.

Discounts are usually automatic when researchers identify themselves via their UAB email address. In cases where an article is published by authors from various institutions, the same author agrees with the supplier who will bear the cost of the Article Processing Charge.

Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC)
UAB researchers benefit from a 15% discount on the costs of publishing open access articles in hybrid journals (subscription journals that allow researchers to publish their open access articles by paying the APC) of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC).

Said discount shall not apply when articles are published in RSC journals that are already open access (Gold Open Access) (RSC Advances, RSC Chemical Biology, Nanoscale Advances, Materials Advances.)

Sage
This provider currently also offers a 15% discount for articles to be published in some of its open access journals, which can be checked in the Gold OA title tab (15% discount) in the Sage Title List.

American Chemical Society
ACS applies discounts for UAB authors publishing open access articles in hybrid journals authorised by the University. Discounts are also in place for ACS members.

  • UAB authors: the APC stands at USD 3,500 if researchers want to publish their articles in open access without any embargo and USD 1,500 when publishing articles with 1 year embargo.
  • UAB authors who are also ACS members: the APC stands at USD 3,250 if researchers want to publish their articles in immediate open access and USD 1,250 when publishing articles with 1 year embargo.

Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI)
UAB's membership to the Institutional Open Access Program (IOAP) allows the University's research staff to reduce the costs of publishing in the Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI) journals by 10%.

Discounts are applied to members of the UAB community when publishing articles in any of the 200+ multidisciplinary open access scientific journals published by this publishing house.

Please note that if an author qualifies for various types of MDPI discounts (because in addition to being a member of the UAB it is also a member of the editorial committee of an MDPI publication, or because it is also a reviewer of one of the publisher's publications, etc.) such discounts are not cumulative in nature—i.e. the author will need to decide whether to accept the institutional discount or any of the other discount—.
