Ana Ripoll Aracil elected new Rector of the UAB

Ana Ripoll Aracil, professor in Architecture and Computer Technology, was elected new Rector of the UAB yesterday with 56.09 per cent of weighted votes. Candidate Lluís Tort Bardolet, professor in Physiology, received 43.91 per cent of weighted votes.
Participation in the elections varied between the different sectors. Whereas in the civil service grade of the university teaching staff participation reached 67.79 per cent, participation among the student sector was only 8.2 per cent. In the sector of teaching and research staff and trainee academic and research staff, 24.8 per cent of the electors cast their vote, while the percentage reached 40.31 among the administrative and service staff.

Ana Ripoll Aracil is professor in Architecture and Computer Technology and was Vice-Rector of the Academic Staff during Lluís Ferrer's second mandate (2005-2008).

She earned her degree in Physics from Universidad Complutense de Madrid in 1975 and her doctor's degree from Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona in 1980. Ripoll received a grant from the Spanish National Research Council and was assistant lecturer at the Department of Computing and Automation at Universidad Complutense de Madrid from 1976 to 1978.

She became part of the Department of Computing at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona in 1978 as an assistant lecturer and later as a full lecturer. In 1992 she became professor in Architecture and Computer Technology.

Ana Ripoll has worked in several areas of research within the field of Computer Architecture and Parallel Processing. She actively worked in the creation of the research groups Static Assignation of Programs, Dynamic Balance of Force, Parallel Program and Performance Prediction Models, and Distribution Systems for Video-on-Demand Applications.

She has published over a hundred articles in specialised journals and for international conferences, and has directed eight doctoral theses. She also participated in several state-funded national and international research projects and worked as a consultant and advisor for different public institutions.

Ana Ripoll Aracil is the first woman to be elected Rector since the founding of the University in 1968.
