A week of activities to promote sustainable mobility

UAB will be celebrating a new edition of its Sustainable and Safe Mobility Week from 7 to 11 November, with the aim of helping the university community become aware of all economic, environmental and social benefits included in using buses, trains, bicycles or walking, and to communicate the UAB Mobility Plan.

Choosing these types of more sustainable transport means are positive for the health and wellbeing of people and also help to preserve the environment since they drastically reduce the negative impacts on the environment and the land. Sustainable mobility focuses on using transport means which spend the least amount of energy and contaminate as little as possible.

This model aims to balance out the effects of the still dominant type of transport, mainly motorised private vehicles. This unsustainable means of transport entails a high consumption of energy and a large amount of gas emissions, bringing about diseases caused by contamination, a high rate of accidents and the social exclusion of those who cannot afford private transport means.

Competitions and Exhibits

Several activities will take place during the Sustainable and Safe Mobility Week. On 9 November UAB will be celebrating "Bicycle Day", with stands at the Plaça Cívica where bicycles will be exhibited, people can have their own bike inspected, information on bike trails in and around campus will be available, and there will be a drawing for a new bicycle worth 500 Euros. Activities will take place from 10 am to 2 pm.

Members of the university can also participate in a photo competition on themes related to sustainable mobility. Participants will enter to win a 'T-trimestre' travel card for free public transport during three months. The winning photo will be published on the UAB mobility and transport website.

Another 'T-trimestre' card will be given to the winner of the transports competition, in which different means of public transport used to reach the UAB will be compared. On 9 November participants are asked to report on their trip from home to their class or workplace at the university: the trajectory, means used, economic cost, and elapsed time.
