The UAB to commemorate International Day of Women and Girls in Science with numerous activities
The School of Engineering, the Faculty of Biosciences, the Faculty of Science, and the Library of Science and Technology of the UAB have organised a wide range of activities for 11 February in celebration of International Day of Women and Girls in Science. This day aims to recognise and give visibility to the key role of women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, and to promote gender equality in these fields.
Under the Argó Programme, the School of Engineering, the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Biosciences, in collaboration with the Institute for Education Studies (ICE-UAB), will be offering the Ambaixadores STEM-UAB talk, aimed at primary school children (5th and 6th grades). Between February and June of this academic year, female undergraduate, master's and PhD students in the disciplines of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) will be visiting the primary school where they studied to explain in a close and understandable way when they first discovered their interest in these fields. The central value of the proposal is the first-person testimonial, an experiential story through which they become close and real references, to help primary school girls identify with them, gain confidence, and decide to study these disciplines.
Three exhibitions will be on display in February at the Library of Science and Technology (BCT):
*From 2 to 27 February: Maria Assumpció Català i Poch: matemàtica i astrònoma
An itinerant exhibition that highlights the figure of Maria Assumpció Català i Poch (1925 – 2009), Catalan mathematician and astronomer, on the centenary of her birth. The exhibition is an initiative of the Catalan Women's Institute which will be in the entrance hall of the library from 2 to 20 February and, in the School of Engineering from 23 to 27 February.
From 2 February to 8 March: Les científiques divulguen ciència
In the BCT Space and in the "Ciència per llegir" (Science to Read) section of the website, there will be literary and informative proposals written by and about women in science.
From 10 February to 13 March: Les científiques en la revolució quàntica
An exhibition organised with the collaboration of ICREA researcher Anna Sanpera, from the Quantum Information Group (GIQ) of the Department of Physics.
Other related activities that will be offered are:
12 February at 1:00 p.m.: presentation of Paradojas de la experimentación en animales
Marta Tafalla, lecturer in the Department of Philosophy at the UAB, will present her book Paradojas de la experimentación en animales as part of the La Tarima de la BCT activity series.
12 February from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.: Institutional event commemorating International Day of Women and Girls in Science
An event will be held in the Auditorium of the faculties of Science and Biosciences to remember that women have been key in science and that even today there are inequalities that need to be overcome. It aims to break stereotypes, give visibility to female scientists, and encourage girls to see science as a natural and possible option.
12 February from 3:00 p.m to 5:00 p.m.: Workshop on Dones & Enginyeria "Lidera el teu propi camí"
A two-hour training programme will be held in Seminar Room H (QC/3115.4) of the School of Engineering, which will consist of learning how to create a personal brand and use social networks from a feminist perspective.
The Second Memes Contest of the Science and Technology Library will also be held, aimed at students from the faculties of Science and Biosciences and the School of Engineering. The goal of the contest is to make visible the essential role of women in the scientific world. The period for submitting proposals will be open from 9 to 27 February.
The Veterinary Library is organising an interactive panel from 9 to 13 February to invite people to reflect on the role of women in veterinary science and in food science and technology. It will do so with two formats: “Break the Myth”, a quiz on information and prejudices about women in science, and “Thought Bubbles”, where participants can contribute experiences and thoughts on different issues.
Finally, numerous researchers will be playing an important role in outreach activities in different educational centres throughout Catalonia, through actions organised by the UAB's own institutes such as the Institute of Biotechnology and Biomedicine, the Institute of Neuroscience and the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology, and the women scientific actions, #científiques, promoted by the Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation.
