Today the UAB's institutional event took place on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, in which the University has committed to consolidating itself as a "reference point in respect for human rights" and a "safe space", as stated by Rector Javier Lafuente in his speech. The event consisted in members of the university community planting lilac flowers in the Plaça del Coneixement, the reading of a manifesto, and a minute of silence in tribute to the victims of these "tragic events".

Rector Lafuente also paid tribute to those committed to activism against this type of violence, both institutionally and socially. In this regard, the UAB's general secretary, Esther Zapater, thanked the work carried out by the University's services and centres, as well as by members of the university community, and stated that institutions must act with "commitment to zero tolerance", with "activities and activism" and with the "responsibility" inherent in a "fight that involves us all".

At the event, an institutional manifesto was read by students Ruth Duarte, from the double degree in Sociology and Statistics; Mei Mating Gómez, from the Master's in Research in Psychosocial Intervention; and Sandra Jordan, from the degree in Psychology. This year's manifesto placed special emphasis on the problem of violence carried out from digital channels, which affects all types of women but especially impacts the lives of the youngest population: as the text explains, 90% of victims of the dissemination of images without consent are young women. Online violence is very diverse and includes cyberbullying, geolocations, control of personal accounts, etc. It fuels stereotypes, seriously affects the health of victims and violates their freedom of expression, in addition to being scarcely acknowledged by their surroundings and made to suffer from the denialism of speeches that "want to roll back women's rights".

The event, organised by the Equality and Diversity Service of the UAB, also included the participation of the UAB Chamber Choir. As for the lilac flowers planted, they will be in the roundabout located between the Faculty of Arts & Humanities and the Humanities Library. The planting was an initiative by the Talher Association with the collaboration of the Office of Sustainability and the Community Development Unit of the UAB.
