Premiere of the documentary "Mixed Voices"

Through their stories, the documentary reveals that positive and transformative experiences of mixedness — a growing reality in Spain and the rest of the world — can coexist with negative stereotypes and prejudices and the continued stigmatisation and discrimination of racialised groups, who are more limited in their identity choices. 

After having interviewed a total of 152 participants of mixed descent, the material for the documentary was collected in 2020, in the midst of a full lockdown because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Each participant recorded their own video, which was later edited to compose the documentary. By talking in first person and without intermediaries in the elocution, the result is a documentary that is characterised by the transparency of the voices and faces of participants, and that serves as a plea of ​​the qualitative audio-visual methodology in social sciences and its ability to transcend the exclusively academic space to engage in a dialogue with society in general.

Mixed Voices, which can be viewed at this link, is the result of the research project "Mixed Youth: Sociability and identity processes in children of mixed unions: mixedness, between inclusion and social constriction,” conducted by the Research Group on Immigration, Mixedness, and Social Cohesion (INMIX), and was directed by Professor Dan Rodríguez-García from the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology at the UAB and director of the INMIX research group.
