International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia

The documentary I hate New York (2018) by Gustavo Sánchez will be screened on 14 May in Sala Cinema de la UAB on the occasion of the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphohbia and Biphobia. The screening will be followed by a discussion with Gustavo Sánchez, the movie’s director; Gerard López, film editor and former UAB student; and Alma Pereira, representative for the LGTBI+ society “Sin Vergüenza UAB”.

The director, with a personal camera and without a script, goes deep into ten years of the private lives of four female artists and transgender activists in New York’s underground subculture. The main characters of the documentary narrate their experiences and battles of pursuing their own identity in a vital journey halfway between activism and nightlife. The director builds an authentic visual narration about the identity and energy of the city. Particularly, about the survivors of an artistic scene that emerged in the final years of the 80s and started to vanish after the 11S, when the trans subculture got mixed up with punk, disco music, performance and rap as ways of expression and activism.

The soundtrack acts as the essential leitmotiv of the movie. We can hear music from different artists such as Arca, the songwriter Ryuichi Sakamoto, Alva Noto –one of the most important International Experimental Scene pioneers-, the drag singer Sharon Needles and punk-rock singers Transisters, whose history appears in the film.

The documentary also reveals the untold story of Chloe Dzubilo, a crucial feminist icon in the defense of the transgender community’s civil rights during the critical years of AIDS expansion.

This film has been screened in several international festivals such as Raindance Film Festival of London, New York's LGBT Film Festival and D’A Festival Internacional de Cine de Autor de Barcelona, among many others. The film was also nominated as Best Documentary for the Premis Gaudí and for the Festival de San Sebastián (SSIFF). The documentary won the prize as Best Documentary in both Festival de Cine de Murcia (IBAFF) and in the Girona International Film Festival (GIFF), as well as the Miguel Award in the Festival de Málaga.

Gustavo Sánchez (Úbeda, 1978) made her debut as a documentary director with her first work I Hate New York, written, directed and produced by himself with the collaboration of the director J. A. Bayona. He studied Philology in the University of Granada and in the University of Aberdeen. He also graduated from Audiovisual Communication in the University of Salamanca.
