Taking public transport to the UAB just got cheaper
In January, all trips to and from the UAB from the metropolitan area of Barcelona will change and cost the same price, thanks to a decision made by the ATM to offer a flat rate for all public transport trips within the 36 municipalities of the Barcelona metropolitan area (which includes Cerdanyola del Vallès). Travels from Sabadell or Terrassa will continue to be considered 1 Zone and 2 Zones trips.
The number of students and workers living in any of the 18 municipalities of Zone 1 who may benefit from this reduction in prices starting in January is 12,363 people, of which 83% travel to the UAB by public transport.
Starting in January, integrated public transport trips between the UAB and Barcelona will all share the same price, thanks to a decision made by the ATM (Autoritat de Transport Metropolità) to create a flat rate for all trips between the 36 municipalities of the metropolitan area (this includes the town of Cerdanyola del Vallès, where the UAB is located, and which forms part of Zone 2), regardless of the zone they belong to.
This represents an important reduction in prices for the 12,300 people travelling to the UAB from one of the 18 towns belonging to the first zone: Badalona, Barcelona, Castelldefels, Cornellà de Llobregat, El Prat de Llobregat, Esplugues de Llobregat, Gavà, Hospitalet de Llobregat, Montcada i Reixac, Montgat, Sant Adrià de Besòs, Sant Boi de Llobregat, Sant Feliu de Llobregat, Sant Joan Despí, Sant Just Desvern, Santa Coloma de Gramenet, Tiana and Viladecans.
Thus, compared to current rates, a T-10 ticket will cost 49% less (from 20.10 euros to 10.20 euros). Tickets such as the T-Jove, T-Mes or the T-Trimestre will cost 26% less (from 142 to 105 euros; from 72 to 54 euros; and from 196 to 145 euros, respectively).
A total of 12,300 people currently travel to the UAB from Zone 1
The total of students and workers living in any of the 18 municipalities of Zone 1 and who may benefit from this reduction in prices starting in January is 12,363 people (the majority living in Barcelona: 9,100). According to the 2017 UAB Mobility Survey, 83% of these people use public transport to travel to the UAB.
In contrast, those travelling from Sabadell or Terrassa to the UAB will need a 1 Zone or 2 Zone ticket, as before, given that the 18 municipalities of the metropolitan area (including Cerdanyola del Vallès, where the UAB is located) in which the new prices will be applied do not change zone.Therefore, this flat rate does not represent a change in travel zones. Cerdanyola del Vallès, and therefore all UAB train and bus stops, will continue to belong to Zone 2. Thus, the UAB's relation with the rest of municipalities from other zones will continue to be the same.
The measure applied by the ATM starting on 1 January 2019 for all integrated tickets will only be valid for trips beginning and ending within the area comprising 36 municipalities (18 belonging to Zone 1 and 18 belonging to Zone 2) which make up the metropolitan area.
A Long Awaited Change
Changing to a new flat rate is very positive for the UAB community, which has spent years alongside other regional entities demanding cheaper public transport options.
In fact, this is one of the measures included in the UAB Mobility Plan 2018-2024 as a fundamental aspect for achieving a more sustainable mobility model.
