Young migrants learn to swim

Projecte Nedem amb tu

The pilot project "Nedem amb tu" aims to ensure that unaccompanied young migrants lose their fear of water. The project was born as a social initiative in the university sphere and wants to teach young unaccompanied migrant people to swim. From the realization of classes in the pool of the Physical Activity Service that are taught by a professional monitor, and with the occasional support of volunteers of the university community of the UAB.

The beneficiaries are unaccompanied young migrant boys and girls, linked to centres and/or shelters of entities that work in collaboration with the Directorate General for Child and Adolescent Care (DGAIA).

Often the relationship of these young migrants with water is not pleasant, either because they have lived traumatic experiences during their migratory journey or because they have never had the opportunity to swim. On other occasions, the aquatic environment is known and represents a means of recreation or even a way for its future labour insertion. In all cases Nedem with you offers them the opportunity to break fears, pose new challenges and trust their own abilities to overcome.

Currently, three weekly sessions are scheduled, of one hour each, in which boys and girls of the Association in via, the Cooperative EDUVIC and the Fundació Diagrama participate. The project has the complicity of the Physical Activity Service (SAF) of the UAB, which puts at your disposal the facilities and facilities of coordination with its technical staff to organize the sessions.

A pilot project with social impact

The project "Nedem amb tu" is based on the proposal made to the Fundació Autònoma Solidària (FAS) by Dr. Iván Aybar, Professor at the Faculty of Law of the UAB (Department of Public Law and Historical-Legal Sciences), Researcher at the Institute of European Studies and also involved in the University Observatory on Unaccompanied Foreign Minors in Catalonia (OUNMENAC). The initiative has the technical support of the Directorate General for Child and Adolescent Care (DGAIA), given the positive impact its development has on the beneficiary group.

The Fundació Autònoma Solidària (FAS) is implementing during this academic year 2021-2022 the pilot phase to design a new intervention space that can be extended and implemented in more parts of the territory.

The project receives financial support from Fundació la Caixa and coordinates with other agents such as the Red Cross, with the aim of defining the training actions of volunteering and other specific activities.
