A total of 1800 runners took part in the 7th edition of the UAB Solidary Race, which took place on 16 December, within the context of the 50 Year Anniversary of UAB. The race supports La Marató de TV3, which will donate the money raised to cancer research.

There were 88 volunteers who made sure that the race would develop smoothly through organizational and administrational tasks: lanyard and t-shirt distribution to runners, preparation of the paddock, the circuit and the entities fair, as well as collaboration in the recovering area. Fundació Autònoma Solidària was in charge of managing this volunteering project.

The UAB race had different itineraries and distances: a 6km walk, a 6km run, an 11km run or a 480m reduced mobility race. All itineraries had their starting and final point in Vila Universitària, but the longest races also had the opportunity to cross the Sincrotró Alba and Cerdanyola del Vallès.

The 10km runner winners were Paco Castellano Rico, from Cerdanyola del Vallès, in the masculine category and Irene Sánchez, sixth-year student in Medicine from Castellar, in the feminine category.

Cancer research
Cancer is the first cause of death for men and the second for women in Catalonia. Every day 28 people die of cancer, which is more than 10.000 per year. Biomedical research allowed a 7% increase on cancer survival in the past ten years in Catalonia, the average nowadays being 55%. Despite the progress on treatments, diagnosis and prevention methods, the probability to suffer from cancer is still very high: 1 out of every 2 men and 1 out of every 4 women will have cancer throughout their lives.
