Awards ceremony for the 22nd Giovanni Pontiero Translation Prize

The Centro de Língua Portuguesa in Barcelona and the UAB Faculty of Translation will host the 22nd edition of the Giovanni Pontiero Translation Prize, which in addition to paying tribute to the translator Giovanni Pontiero, alternates each year with an award for the best translation from Portuguese into Catalan or Spanish.

The winner of the 22nd Giovanni Pontiero Translation Prize is Juan Rámon Santos for his translation into Spanish of the novel Lo invisible (La Umbría y la Solana) by Rui Lage. Santos holds a degree in Law and Political Science and author of novels, short stoiries, poems and children's books. He also works as a cultural manager and from 2015 to 2019 he was appointed president of the Writer's from Extremedura Association. He currently has a sections on the Planex.es website entitled "Con VE de libro", where he recommends and comments on books.

In 2020, Santos translated Lo invisible, in which the poet Fernando Pessoa is called to a ficticious town in the Alvão mountains in northern Portugal, to investigate strange and misterious events occuring in a rural and archaic setting. Two years later, Santos will be awarded the 22nd Giovanni Pontiero Translation Award in an event which will take place on 29 November at 6:30 p.m. at the Jaume Fuster Library in Barcelona.

Creative writing

During that same event, an award will be given to the winner of the first edition of Catalonia's Creative Writing in Portuguese competition, organised by the Centro de Língua Portuguesa / Camões, I.P. em Barcelona and the General Consulate of Portugal in Barcelona. The winner is Mònica López Bages for her story entitled Caleidoscópio ou o Eco da Sibila. López is Catalan philologist, translation and lecturer at the Rovira i Virgili University.She is also author of the book of short stories Rua da Esperança, 112 (Petròpolis) and writes for several magaizens, includine La guia de Reus.
