On 9 and 10 October 2026, students from the UAB Faculty of Law’s Master's Degree in European Integration, accompanied by Professor Montserrat Pi Llorens, took part in the autumn sessions organised by the Catalan Council of the European Movement (CCME) in Torroella de Montgrí.

The fifth edition of the CCME European University took place at the Museum of the Mediterranean under the theme “EU Security in a Polarised World”, with the aim of analysing the main challenges facing the European Union in the current international geopolitical context.

The event brought together institutional representatives, academics and experts in European affairs and international relations, who discussed the European Union’s role as a global actor, its foreign and security policy, European defence and the challenges of integration.

A programme featuring leading experts in European affairs

The opening session featured institutional representatives, including Jordi Xuclà, President of the Catalan Council of the European Movement, and Miquel Noguer, President of the Girona Provincial Council.

Over the two days, the programme included contributions from:

  • Rafael Grasa, Professor Emeritus of International Relations at the UAB and Associate Researcher at CIDOB, on the EU’s role in a polarised world.

  • Josep Coll, a former career ambassador of the European Union, on the European External Action Service and Europe’s diplomatic capacity.

  • Fernando Valenzuela, diplomat and former Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, and Francisco Aldecoa, Professor Emeritus of International Relations and President of the Spanish Federal Council of the European Movement, on the challenges of European defence.

  • Montserrat Nebrera, Director of the Carlemany Institute for European Studies, on regulation and decision-making processes within the European Union.

  • Meritxell Serret, former Minister for Foreign Action and European Union of the Government of Catalonia, on the dilemmas surrounding European security and defence.

  • Victòria Alsina, also a former Minister for Foreign Action and European Union, on the state of relations between the EU and the United States.

The programme also included a workshop focusing on young people’s demands of the European Union, bringing the perspective of younger generations into discussions about the future of the European project.

A learning experience beyond the classroom

Participation in these sessions is part of the range of complementary academic and educational activities promoted by the UAB Master's Degree in European Integration, which aims to provide students with a practical, interdisciplinary and up-to-date understanding of the main challenges facing European integration.

Beyond regular teaching, the programme encourages students to take part in seminars, conferences, specialist sessions and other initiatives that facilitate direct contact with experts, institutional representatives and professionals involved in European Union policy.

In this context, the Master's programme offers scholarships each year to several students to enable them to attend the CCME European University sessions. This initiative is particularly valuable in complementing their academic training, fostering critical thinking and encouraging the exchange of knowledge and experiences.

The UAB Faculty of Law is pleased to continue collaborating on this initiative and thanks the Catalan Council of the European Movement for its work in promoting debate and knowledge about the European Union.
