Resum:
Lagrangian tools, grounded in the theory of dynamical systems, provide a powerfulmathematical framework for the analysis of oceanic and atmospheric flows. They enablethe prediction of pollutant dispersion, the identification of source regions, therepresentation of unresolved physical processes, and the detection of transportpathways and barriers separating flow regimes with distinct dynamical fates. Lagrangianmethods are applicable across a wide range of spatial and temporal scales, fromturbulent to planetary, in both atmospheric and oceanic contexts.
In this talk, we present several Lagrangian methodologies, based on dynamical systemstheory, to study transport and mixing processes associated with atmospheric featuresas well as oceanic water-mass circulation. These approaches allow us to identifyLagrangian coherent structures that organize fluid deformation, reduce the complexityof high-dimensional flow dynamics, and rigorously characterize parcel evolution andtransport pathways in a variety of geophysical settings.
