Introduction

The degree structure allows students to course different specialisations: Fundamental Physics, Applied Physics or a third option which can be taken simultaneously with the degree in Mathematics or the degree in Physics and Chemistry.

The connection the Department of Physics has with top-rated international science facilities - such as the LHC laboratory at CERN in Geneva, the gamma rays telescope MAGIC and the ALBA synchrotron facility - translates into a high level of teaching and research for its students, and a degree recognised in all of Europe. Proof of this high quality is the department's participation in the discovery of the Higgs particle. The High Energy Physics Institute (IFAE), a UAB-partner research centre, recently received recognition for the Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence.

The UAB is currently at the centre of one of the most important nanoscience and nanotechnology poles in Europe, the Barcelona Nanotechnology Cluster - Bellaterra. The cluster is an organisation focused on scientific research and its industrial applications. It groups together the skills and experiences in nanoscience and nanotechnology by the Catalan Institute of Nanotechnology (ICN), the Institute of Materials Science (ICMAB-CSIC) the National Microelectronics Centre (CNM-CSIC), the Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Research Centre (CIN2), the MATGAS research centre, and the company D+T Microelectrònica AIE, all of which are members of the UAB Research Park.

The existence of several collaboration projects among members of the Department of Physics and research centres belonging to local and international companies facilitates students' entering the job market, both in businesses and in basic and applied research.
