Collegiate Castle of Sant Pere d'Àger

Castell Col·legiata d'Àger

At the top of the natural hill of Àger, are the remains of the castle and collegiate church of Sant Pere. On the remains of the Andalusian wall, after 1034 construction work began on a castle complex that consisted of the following buildings, distributed in neighborhoods: the two-story church, with galilea and cloister, which housed the canonry Augustinian the main tower, the largest in Catalonia county; a residence for the gentlemen of Àger, Arnau Mir de Tost and Arsenda; a wall that defended the whole. In the 14th century, major reforms affected the facade of the church and the cloister, under the patronage of the Counts of Urgell. The whole was seriously affected by the War of the Reapers, the War of Succession and the first Carline War. It was abandoned from the last third of the 19th century.

The first conservation interventions were made thanks to the Commonwealth of Catalonia. Then, until the 60s and 80s, there was no further intervention. The most significant archaeological interventions took place in the 1990s and at the beginning of the 21st century, shedding light on the history of the occupation of the hill and the constructive complexity that spans more than a millennium of continuous use. In 2010, the restitution works of the church of Sant Pere were completed.

Historical monument listed as BCIN, no. 252-MH, by agreement of the Government of the Generalitat of 25/5/1998, published in the DOGC on 22/6/1998.
