Museum of Guissona

Museu de Guissona

The museum tradition in Guissona dates back to the middle of the 20th century, thanks to the interest in local history of the erudite Eduard Camps i Cava. The result of this interest was the publication of “Les notes històriques de Guissona”, a monograph on local history and the creation of an important collection of historical objects from the plains of Guissona.

The museum was created in 1953 and housed on the ground floor of the town council building; it changed locations a few times until in 2011 it was given a permanent location next to the archaeological park by restoring an old distillery which together now make up a notable archaeological site.

The museum conserves and exhibits the remarkable archaeological pieces discovered at the site and is the interpretation centre for this important Roman city belonging to the ancient administrative area of Conventus Tarraconensis, with archaeological research making advances in the knowledge about the area.

In May 2016, the Museum of Guissona was inscribed into the registry of museums of Catalonia and the museum is also part of the network of museums of the region of Lleida.
