The local phase of the UAB’s the High School Debating League is over. The competition, which began on Monday 24th February, featured 43 debates between various institutes from across Catalonia. Now, while we wait for the final phase that will take place at Rovira i Virgili University, we can now relive all the debates on the Youtube channel Dinamització Comunitària UAB.

In this playlist, you will find all the discussions that took place in the UAB. You will see the debates in the order in which they were held: first those of the first phase and then those of the second phase.

In the first phase, the teams, divided into groups, they held up to three debates advocating both "For" and "Against" the question "Does technology increase happiness?". In the second stage, the two best of each group moved on to the quarter-finals, then to the semi-finals and finally to the final.

The Debate League is a very enriching experience for the participants, as they work on oratory, argumentation, and the search for sources. 136 students from 24 different institutes have passed through the lectern of the UAB Theatre. 14 schools that participated this year had already participed in previous editions, which shows the consolidation of this format.

The competition is not only an experience in terms of academic debate, but also, in many other aspects. It represents the first contact with the university: “the atmosphere in the UAB is so open-minded… people didn’t look at me. It was a blast! It didn’t matter how I dressed. At the university I felt free to be myself", explained, for example, a student of the Institut Jonqueras  high school from Sabadell in an interview with the newspaper Món de Sabadell. In response to the question of whether they would repeat this experience, participants stated that they would do so again.

The CIC Batxillerats Institute, winner of this edition , will fight for the grand prize in the final phase to be held at Rovira i Virgili University, on a date that is still to be determined due to the current situation. Until then, we can relive the previous phase that we enjoyed at the Autonomous University of Barcelona.

In this blog you can find all the information, you can also read the daily summaries and deepen in other activities of the debate.
