UAB rector transmits the institution's support to students of the UAB Refugee Programme
Rector Javier Lafuente held a meeting on 25 March with students from Palestine who are studying at the UAB thanks to the aids of the UAB Refugee Programme. Rector Lafuente pledge to convey to the rest of the state's universities the need to deepen the policies of reception and support for the Palestinian academic community.
The rector received four students from Palestine accompanied by Esher Zapater, general secretary of the UAB, and Jordi Prat, director of the Fundació Autònoma Solidària, the entity in charge of the UAB Refugee Programme. The meeting served so that the UAB rector could learn first-hand about the academic perspectives and personal circumstances of each student.
The Palestinian students expressed their gratitude for the support received from the institution and the university community, and remarked the need to increase the resources and solidarity actions of Spanish universities with the Palestinian academic community. Rector Lafuente assured the students that he would transfer their requests to the rest of the academic institutions, taking advantage of the framework of CRUE Spanish Universities.
The students participating in the meeting included Esraa, PhD graduate in Business Creation and Management; Asmaa, PhD student in Chemistry; Hanadi, master's degree student in English Studies: Linguistic, Literary and Sociocultural Perspectives; and Malik, master's degree student in Research and Innovation in Computer Based Science and Engineering.
The UAB has conducted several solidarity initiatives and has repeatedly expressed positions in favour of peace in the Middle East and against the genocide of Palestinian people. Among these actions is the #UABRefugee Scholarships programme, which aims to help those who have had to abandon their university studies due to the war conflict to resume their studies at the UAB, regardless of whether they are residents of Palestine or refugees in neighbouring countries.
